What Is Erosive Gastropathy?
Erosive gastropathy is a disorder which occurs when the protective lining of the stomach is destroyed that forms small erosions or sores. Unlike plain gastritis (inflammation only), it may result in mild bleeding which that may be observed on endoscopy or due to such signs as dark stools. An example of ICD-10 common code includes K29.50 (gastritis without bleeding) and K29.70 (gastritis with bleeding).
Common Causes and Risk Factors
- NSAID therapy (e.g. ibuprofen, aspirin) Long-term.
- Consumer drinking and smoking.
- Severe condition, an emergency, or operation.
- Helicobacter pylori infection.
- Steroids or anti-coagulants that are used long term.
- The bile is refluxed in the stomach.
Signs and Symptoms
- The upper abdominal pain is sharp and chewing.
- Nausea or vomiting (that may include blood).
- Small meals are followed by early satiety or distension.
- Black tarry stool that is internalized and bleeds.
- Feeling of dizziness or weakness on the body as a result of slow bleeding.
How Dr. Rishi Diagnoses Erosive Gastropathy?
Dr. Rishi Chadha uses a step-by-step approach:
Health History and Physical Exam
He analyzes your symptoms, medicines (NSAIDs, steroids, blood thinners), alcohol and tobacco, and past GI diseases.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD)
A very big endoscope is placed directly into your stomach through your mouth so as to look at erosions, inflammation, or active bleeding.
Biopsy
In endoscopy, small pieces of tissue samples are used to test the presence of H. pylori infection and the rule out of other illnesses including malignancy.
Blood Tests
- Complete blood count (CBC) to exclude anemia on the grounds of chronic bleeding.
- H. pylori to establish infection, antibody or antigen.
- The overall health and treatment directions are determined by basic metabolic and liver functions test outcomes.
Imaging Studies (If Needed)
To exclude other causes of abdominal pains or bleeding, the abdominal ultrasound or CT scan can be ordered.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the distinction between gastropathy and gastritis erosion?
Erosive gastropathy causes erosions or small sores which can be seen in the stomach lining but gastritis just signifies inflammation without tissue damage.
Is the erosive gastropathy severe?
It can be. Mild bleeding can be the result of erosion and it will lead to the state of anemia in the long run, provided that severe bleeding takes place.
ICD-10 of erosive gastropathy?
These codes are K29.50 gastritis without bleeding and K29.70 gastritis with bleeding.
Could it be that erosive gastropathy is self treating?
Milder cases would be ameliorated by change in diet and lifestyle, but medical management remedies them quicker and reduces complications.
Will it maintain endoscopy to identify it?
Yes. The highest standard of determining erosions, severity, and absence of ulcers or cancer is upper endoscopy (EGD).
What foods should I avoid?
Avoid spicy, acidic or fatty foods and caffeine and alcohol as well due to the irritation of the lining of the stomach and worsening of the symptoms.
How long does treatment take?
Most patients will obtain a significant amount of reprieve within a span of 4 -8 weeks when subjected to proper therapy probably including medications and change of diet.
Am I to be there on PPIs forever?
Not necessarily. Many patients can taper and stop PPIs when the lining is healed and the symptoms have disappeared.
Will stress produce erosive gastropathy?
Yes. Physical stressors (like serious illness, surgery or trauma) may cause or worsen the erosive changes of the stomach lining.
Does H. pylori cause erosive gastropathy?
Yes. H. pylori infection can be included in the factors contributing to erosions and treatment of this infection will enhance the faster healing of the stomach lining.
