Natalizumab is used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS) and Crohns disease by preventing immune cells from entering the brain and intestinal tissues, reducing inflammation.
Natalizumab acts by interfering with the work of a protein of the immune system known as alpha-4 integrin, which blocks the entry of immune cells into the blood-brain barrier and their attack against nerve cells in MS, or ingestion through the intestines in Crohns disease.
The side effects are common such as the headache, fatigue, and pain in the joints. Other side effects may be quite serious such as infections with the potential of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML).
Natalizumab is given by intravenous (IV) infusion injections every 4 weeks, normally in a healthcare center.
The use of Natalizumab when required should only be done in case of necessity in pregnancy. Overview with your medical care provider whether or not you are pregnant or intend on becoming pregnant.
Yes, Natalizumab may pose the risk of severe infections, PML, a brain infection, which is not very frequent but can be fatal. There is a need to monitor it regularly.
In case of skipping a dose of Natalizumab, you need to call your provider and differ to the schedule of the infusion at the very earliest opportunity.
Natalizumab is useful in MS because it does not allow immune cells to attack the myelin sheath of the brain and the spinal cord, thus stopping its exacerbation and delaying the progression of the disease.
Natalizumab has the potential to interact with other immunosuppressive agents. In case of incompatibility between medications, remember to inform your healthcare provider about every medication that you are on.
Natalizumab can also cause serious infections especially PML and may predispose individuals using the product on a long-term basis and, thus, must be closely monitored by your healthcare provider.
