What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)?
Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic disorder that is characterized by inflammation of the digestive system. These two outweigh one another so that Crohn disease can affect any section of the gut, and ulcerative colitis can only affect the colon. In contrast to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), IBD results in observable destruction and inflammation that is visible on either an endoscopic examination or an x-ray.
Common Symptoms
The symptoms of IBD in individuals are subject to change, though some of the symptoms may include:
- Frequent or urgent diarrhea
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Blood in the stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue or low energy
- Constipation (in some cases)
Causes
ID is caused or precipitated by the combination of factors:
- Genetics - this IBD increases your risk with a family history.
- Dysfunction in immune system - healthy gut tissue is attacked by the immune response of the body.
- Environmental and lifestyle factors - smoking, stress, some diets and infections.
