What Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)?

Patients that suffer from IBS usually record frequent belly pain or discomfort and bowel behaviors- diarrhea, constipation, or both. Spaniards refer to the Syndrome del intestino irritable. Using the ICD-10 system, it is coded K58 (K58.0 K58.1: IBS with diarrhea, respectively; constipation).
Common Symptoms
The symptoms of IBS have the tendency to change variablely and mostly come and disappear. Typical signs include:
- Belly cramps or pain
- Bloating or excess gas
- Either diarrhea or constipation or sometimes both.
- Mucus in the stool
- A sensation of unfinished bowels.
Causes
The precise pathology of IBS is still not quite clear enough, although there are a number of possible causes:
- Malfunction of gut-brain axis: aristocracy of nerve impulses between your gut and your brain.
- Alteration of Gut microbiota: intestinal bacterial imbalance.
- Psychological factors and stress: the flares can be produced by anxiety/tension.
- Dietary triggers: dairy food, caffeine, fatty food or selected carbohydrates.
