An esophageal stricture is a narrowed segment of the esophagus. The narrowing may be short and smooth or long and irregular. Its structure, cause, and severity determine which tests and treatment approach are appropriate.
Causes include reflux-related scarring, eosinophilic esophagitis, pill or infectious injury, prior surgery, radiation, caustic injury, prolonged tube pressure, and malignant or external compression. Identifying the cause is necessary to reduce recurrence.
