What is Dilated CBD?
Dilated common bile duct (CBD) refers to the term where the program, leading bile out of your liver and gallbladder to your small intestine is wider than normal (usually more than 6 mm). This enlargement indicates an obstruction or various other underlying problem and is typically identified using the ultrasound, CT scan or MRCP.
Common Symptoms
Slowed or obstructed over flow of bile may result in:
- Jaundice of lips and eyes (i.e. yellowing).
- Dark-colored urine
- Stool- Light colored or Clay colored.
- Abdominal pain/abdominal discomfort on the upper right hand.
- Itchy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Unexplained weight loss
Causes
The CBD may be dilated by several conditions such as:
- Obstruction with Gall in the duct (choledocholithiasis)
- Post-surgery: the changes following surgery of the gallbladder.
- Stricture due to peritoneal inflammation in the past.
- Bile duct, pancreatic, or hepatic tumor.
- Infections or cholangitis (inflation of the bile ducts)
