What is Chronic Idiopathic Constipation?
Chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) is a chronic constipation with an unknown medical and structural etiology. It takes more than three months to be resolved and cannot be traced on nerve or muscle disease. IDC-10 K59.01 It is known as functional constipation.
Common Symptoms
CIC patients are likely to have the following:
- Less than 3 bowel movements a week
- Hard, dry, or lumpy stools
- Pain or trouble in stooling
- Feeling of incompleteness evacuation
- Blowout, belly pressure or bloating
Causes
One does not fully understand the cause but it could be attributed to a combination of factors:
- Low dietary fiber intake
- Poor intake of fluid (water)
- Lack of exercise or physical activity
- Never on time to evacuate the bowel
- Side effects of certain medications (e.g., opioids, antidepressants)
