The Routine Visit That Changed Everything
Grace finally scheduled her annual physical after her husband gently reminded her it had been years. She expected a quick checkup, maybe a lecture about exercise, and a clean bill of health.
Instead, her primary care physician reviewed her lab results with a concerned expression. Her ALT and AST levels—liver enzymes—were elevated. Not alarmingly high, but enough to warrant further investigation.
The doctor asked about her alcohol intake (minimal), her medications (just a daily multivitamin), and her family history (diabetes, prediabetes). Then she said the words that made Grace's stomach drop: 'I'd like to refer you to a gastroenterologist for a liver ultrasound.'
Grace left the office feeling shaken. She had come in expecting reassurance. Instead, she was facing the possibility that something was wrong—something she had been ignoring for years.
I thought I was just tired. I didn't realize my liver was trying to tell me something.
