What is lymphocytic duodenitis?
The lymphocytic duodenitis is inflammation of the duodenal lining characterized by increased number of lymphocytes (immune cells) on the biopsy. It generally gives rise to the digestive symptoms however is not usually life threatening.
How is lymphocytic duodenitis diagnosed?
It is diagnosed through endoscopy of the upper part of the intestines, and in this procedure a small piece of tissue (biopsy) is removed out of the duodenum and is taken through the microscope to check on the presence of excess lymphocytes.
Can gluten trigger lymphocytic duodenitis?
Yes. When the person consumes gluten, lymphocytic duodenitis can be the result of gluten ingestion in the people with the condition of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. In such cases, the major treatment is a strict gluten-free diet.
What other factors can cause lymphocytic duodenitis?
In addition to gluten, some of the causes are bacterial infections (including H. pylori), some medications (such as NSAIDs, antibiotics), autoimmune diseases, and food sensitivities.
What are the common symptoms?

How is lymphocytic duodenitis treated?
Treatment is based on the etiology. Treatments may involve a gluten-free diet, the use of probiotics, hampering of offending medications, the use of anti-inflammatory drugs in extreme cases, and the use of nutritional supplements to treat deficiencies.
How long before I feel better?
Most of the patients respond to the symptoms in 2-8 weeks with proper treatment, which may be diet change or eliminating an infection.
